A Serendipitous Journey to Nathiagali and Mukshpuri

As seasoned travelers, my wife and I have learned that sometimes, the most memorable adventures arise from unexpected turns. Our recent expedition to Pakistan’s Nathiagali region proved to be a delightful surprise.

Our journey began in Rawalpindi at 9:45 AM, admittedly a bit later than ideal for a Mukshpuri trek. After fueling up, we followed Google Maps via the old Murree Road. Just for your information, we were travelling in a Suzuki Cultus AGS 2021 Model, which is a perfectly suitable car for this adventure.

The Road to Murree and Beyond

The drive to Murree took approximately an hour, and we continued towards Nathiagali. It’s worth noting that Nathiagali lies 86 km from Islamabad via Kashmir Road (Old Murree Road). As we ascended, the climate shifted, offering a refreshing respite from Islamabad’s sweltering heat.

Missing the Mukshpuri Track

Due to poor signage, we inadvertently bypassed the Mukshpuri track’s starting point. This is common for first-time visitors, so future travelers should remain vigilant. I am sharing a picture of the starting point for your information.

Waterfall Experience

Our unintended detour led us to a charming waterfall. While not grandiose, it offered a pleasant vista and a delightful area for families, complete with a water park for children and waterside restaurants for adults. The rough and bumpy road leads to a nice and delightful place.

Nathiagali’s elevation blesses it with a cool climate, making it an ideal escape from the summer heat of lower regions.

Encounter with Monkeys

After passing through Murree, you will encounter many monkeys that graciously greet you with their enchanting presence. These delightful creatures carry their offspring on their backs and eagerly anticipate the arrival of tourists bearing fruits and snacks to share. While it is important to exercise caution, as they can occasionally pose a threat, for the most part, these monkeys exude affection and warmth.

Beware of Tour Guides

Beware of the local tour guides, who may frighten you with their descriptions of the road conditions and directions. We encountered around four to five local tour guides who claimed that the road conditions were dreadful and that our car would not be able to navigate through to reach the waterfall. However, our experience was completely different.

Small vehicles can easily navigate the bumpy roads, ensuring a convenient and smooth journey to the waterfall. Exercise caution and steer clear of any financial scams. Caution is advised when dealing with local tour guides. Many attempt to capitalize on tourists’ unfamiliarity by exaggerating road difficulties. In reality, most vehicles, including compact cars like the Alto, navigate the roads.

Culinary Exploration in Nathiagali

Before embarking on our hike, we ate at a local restaurant in Nathiagali Bazaar. We savored Egg Fried Rice with Chicken Karahi, which was a satisfying choice.

The Mukshpuri Track Adventure

We commenced our trek at 4:00 PM, considerably later than advisable. The trail, flanked by towering trees, offered a poignant reminder of the importance of forest conservation.

Entry Fees

Visitors can hike or ride horses to the summit. Entry fees are nominal: Rs. 20 for adults, Rs. 10 for children, and Rs. 500 for foreign tourists. Horse rides are available for Rs. 50.

Wildlife Park of Ayubia

After a 500-meter ascent, we reached the Wildlife Park of Ayubia. This verdant expanse provided a perfect backdrop for photography and a welcome rest for my wife, who was feeling the effects of the climb.

We spent thirty minutes at that location, taking photos and taking a break. It was delightful to encounter numerous individuals and families hiking in the area. The hike from the bottom to the top is approximately 4 kilometers, and it typically takes 2.5 to 3 hours to complete.

It takes 2.5 hours from the wildlife park we left for our next trip.

Journey Back to Islamabad

As dusk approached and weather conditions deteriorated, we decided to descend. Our return route took us via the Express Way to Murree, avoiding potential traffic on Kashmir Road. A stop at Second Cup Coffee Shop offered a pleasant interlude for refreshments.

Essential Advice for Trekking

For an optimal hiking experience, I recommend:

  • Comfortable, sturdy hiking shoes
  • Breathable clothing (trousers and T-shirts are ideal) – Never go in jeans like I did.
  • A hiking stick for added stability
  • Early arrival on the track so you can summit it and return earlier.

Reflections and Future Plans

While we didn’t reach Mukshpuri Peak as initially planned, our journey was nonetheless enriching. The unexpected detours and challenges only enhanced our appreciation for this beautiful region. We returned home around 11:00 PM, tired but fulfilled, with a renewed determination to summit Mukshpuri Peak on our next adventure.

As travel enthusiasts, we’ve learned that flexibility often leads to the most rewarding experiences. Our Nathiagali expedition, though different from our original plan, offered unique insights and memories that we’ll cherish. We look forward to our next visit, armed with the knowledge gained from this trip, to finally conquer Mukshpuri Peak.
